Julie,
I am from class of 1975 but I just checked
out you alumni site on the Broadus Hawks page. You guys rock! Looks
like you had a great class reunion and I love the web page and reunion
booklet. I read through everyone's bios and realized Nellie Fulton lived
one or two blocks from me when i lived in Billings, MT. My nephew Jon
Himelspach I think was in your class or close to it. I remember a lot of
the kids in your class but they were all little when I graduated. It is
so odd to look at the group picture of 37 and 38 year old people and
still see them as children.

Some of you promised to share your reunion pictures to be
posted here and others have promised information on the 10 year reunion held in
1994! Thanks, Becky, and Lisa, for the pictures in the gallery at the bottom of
this page!

In addition to one classmate
who had transferred (Becky Yount Grant), 23 of the 41 seniors listed in the 1984
Wrangler attended the 20-year class reunion held in Broadus over the2004 4th
of July weekend. This compares to (how many?) who attended the reunion in 1994.
Mike Morella, occasionally
coached by Lisa Lynch, began the Friday night fun with a quiet little voice
which was interrupted with a shout from the crowd of “WHAT HAPPENED, MIKE?” Mike
explained “Now that we have a small child, practicing “quiet time” is routine in
our household.” As such, he was given a microphone and entertained us with
trivia questions from 1984. Many of us believe some of our classmates still
study for tests and that the big trivia winners had done just this, whereas some
of the rest of us had failed to pull our dusty yearbooks from the shelves and
thus failed miserably.
Jay Knowles was unanimously
selected as the one who had changed the most. He is now a clean cut, fit husband
and father of three and is an outspoken military man. Unlike Mike, he now has a
big voice and his eloquent presentation was definitely the most emotional as
well as one of the highlights of the Friday evening festivities at the VFW.
“When you live out of the top of a duffel bag in the bag of a Humvee,” Jay said,
“you can’t strip much more to the basics of who you are.” Jay said that it was
of interest to note that the first piece of mail he received after his arrival
to Iraq was from our local hometown VFW Auxiliary. Very cool! They also served a
nice meal of roast beef, corn, salad, roll and dessert!
Mike gave the group an update
on Leon McPheeters who has attended college classes (in German) while at the
same time learning the German language! What a daunting and remarkable task! It seems that several of our classmates are worldly
travelers and have visited Leon and his wife, Sabine, in Oberasbach, Germany.
Shawn Lockwood was voted as the
classmate who had changed the least, though he had two close competitors in
Margie (Gaskill) Riley and Cindy May.
Sydni (Stieg) Tangaro appears
to have continued her athletic ventures the longest. At the time of the reunion
she was training for two triathlons and we haven't yet heard the results.
An internet search of her name will bring up at least three sets of race
results!
Margie (Gaskill) Riley has the
most children though Julie (Mobley) Bilbrey has quite a passel too if you
include the step and foster children; Juanita (Talcott) Williams has been
married the longest. Jay Knowles (Fort Hood, TX) and Melody (Wetherelt) Hanzlik
of Radcliff, KY and Becky (Yount) Grant Payneville, KY (they live very close to
each other) traveled the farthest to
get to Broadus. In addition to the locals, Dave Archer came from Starbuck, MN,
Sally (Brost) Sawyer from Thedford, NE, Julie (Mobley) Bilbrey from Shell, WY,
Mike Morella from Centennial, CO, Kim (Wash) Hostetter from Mandan, ND, Russ
Millar from St. Onge, SD, Sydni (Stieg) Tangaro from Bozeman and Nellie
(Fulton) Tandy, Misti (Merchant) Badgett and Roxy (Giacometto) Killens from
Billings.
Click
here for a geographical map in case you might be unknowingly traveling past
the home of one of your classmates. Please let
Julie or
Kim know if your town isn't
shown on this map! This
site gives interesting and fun facts on all 50 states, just in case you
might be contemplating a trip to visit a classmate!
Twenty seven of us responded to
Kim (Wash) Hostetter’s request for information to be compiled in the
20-year reunion booklet. Of them, 19 attended.
There were also five who attended without providing any written update for the
book. A big THANK YOU to goes to Kim for her efforts on the book! Many of us
found ourselves drawn to it upon receiving it Friday night when we should have
been visiting! A few of us are going to try to sneak advance copies next time so
we’re studied up on questions to ask, etc. IT IS NOT TOO LATE to get your
information in (or add to) the online version! Again, email
Julie or
Kim because we all want to catch
up with you!
Kudos to Kim (Wash) Hostetter and Cindy May
for their hilarious biographies! There should have been an award for that! Kim,
Mike and Lisa’s infectious and hearty laughs haven’t changed a bit and for some
of us just hearing them banter as if we were back in time was worth the trip!
A big THANK YOU, too, goes to Lisa (Carter)
Lynch, Margie (Gaskill) Riley and Kim (Compton) Blain for their efforts in
making sure there was plenty of food, mementos, etc. The Friday night slide show
brought back many cherished memories.

The gals (Sydni, Mel, Becky and Sally) yakked! |

The guys enjoyed a couple hours pitching horseshoes. |
Saturday’s picnic in the Park brought a
beautiful, cool day and was enjoyed by all. How fun to get a glimpse of our
classmates’ children! Though we didn’t get to vote on it, Kim (Wash) Hostetter’s
daughter, Mollie, was adorable! Julie (Mobley) Bilbrey’s daughter, Jackee
Madsen, appeared to have the greatest resemblance to her mother. Sally (Brost)
Sawyer’s appeared the shyest.
Ray Bogner and Calvin Burch were
instrumental in the horseshoe games. It is my understanding that Calvin was
quite a bit of entertainment when, just as he threw, Sheriff Blain let him know
that "there was a convertible full of fat girls in bikinis going by..."
Kids of all ages enjoyed a game of
volleyball. Some, (along with a few over-entertained parents) opted for the pool.
The Blains, Pattens and Julie Bilbrey found themselves the last to leave for the
day as they awaited their teenagers’ (Ben Patten, Jentry and Janessa Blain and
Jason and Jackee Madsen) return from a dunk in the Powder River just as many of
us used to do in the old days. Julie waited on two groups of kids as her
youngest, Jade, was enjoying the pool with his nephew/Julie’s grandson,
Leighton. Anybody else have grandkids besides Julie Bilbrey and Gordon Severance?
Those of us last to leave the Park extend
their apologies to our classmates. We simply couldn’t outdo (and stay longer)
than some among the Class of 1974 who had gathered at the opposite end of the
Park with their beer coolers. We tried our best to last the longest, and we had
good reason to celebrate: Bill & Melissa Collins, of Dallas, welcomed baby,
Finn, into the world earlier that same
day!
Speaking of babies, Ronda (Green) Lahey, in Florida, is the mother of
identical twin baby girls (Julia and Sannah), born on August 4, 2004. Mike and
Joni Ann Morella are parents to twin boys,
Austin and Anthony,
born February 4, 2005.
Congratulations!
Also, Kim (Wash) Hostetter and her husband, Jeff, traveled to
Shaanxi, China in January, 2005 to retrieve their new daughter,
Maggie Quinn Ya Xuan
Hostetter, born 12/5/03.

Though many have achieved great
accomplishments, some have endured more than their share of loss. We would
like to extend our sympathies to the following classmates who, based on the
information we have, have lost both of their parents to date. They are:
Ray Bogner, Kelly (Dague) West, Jeff Donnelly and Casey Trainer. Those who have lost one parent
include Helenanne (Earley) Cathey, Mark Gnerer, Shawn Lockwood, Cindy May, Les McGill,
Leon McPheeters, Juanita (Talcott) Williams, Kim (Wash) Hostetter, Russ Millar
and most recently, Sydni (Stieg) Tangaro and Sally (Brost) Sawyer.
Dave and Dawn Archer lost a son, Benjamin,
age 4, on 2/3/01.
Starla Perkins has lost two sons, Marc DeLaurier, two months (9/99)
and Kable Williams, 19 (12/03).
Again, our collective sympathies to each of
these families.
